Human Portrait Painting Workshop, with Jacob Gourley, Sun 16 June 2024, 10-4pm, £126

The portrait painting workshop can be booked as a stand alone workshop or as a follow on 2nd-day workshop from the portrait drawing workshop. Some experience in portraiture would be beneficial.  Portrait painting has different demands to drawing. The teaching artist will support, guide and help each individual during the day with techniques and structures.  The portrait painting workshop helps as does the drawing workshop to master the principals of this subject with the emphasis to let each student apply their own working and style.

You will learn how to get the proportions, orientation and structure of the head right. We will introduce you to the basic principles and the preliminary stages of rendering a portrait. We will explain proportional guidelines focusing on the structure of the head, observing the effects of light and shade and the visual challenges it creates. You will work in acrylic mediums.

The course is run in small groups of max 10 and there is plenty of guidance from the teaching artist. Some portraiture experience required to book this course.

• how to achieve different marks
• how to mix the right colour
